Steel Houses and Tiny Houses for the Toroslar Highlands

Toroslar climbs from Mersin's northern edge into snowy Taurus highlands. How we design light-gauge steel houses and tiny houses for snow, cold, wind and mountain roads.

Toroslar runs from the northern edge of Mersin city up into the Taurus Mountains, with pine and cedar forests, high villages such as Arslanköy and summer highland settlements. Winters at altitude bring snow and frost, which is a very different brief from a beach house. That is why, for a steel house in Toroslar or a mountain tiny house, we start with snow, cold and wind.

How the mountain climate shapes the build

  • Snow load: the roof pitch and structural sections must be sized for accumulated snow.
  • Heat loss: thin insulation means high heating costs and condensation on inner surfaces.
  • Frost: freeze-thaw cycles can shift weak foundations, so the base must suit the ground.
  • Wind: exposed ridges call for secure roof fixings and well-sealed windows.

Why a light-gauge steel house?

Steel framing is cut and prepared at our workshop, which shortens on-site work, a real advantage where the building season is short. Steel does not rot, is not attacked by insects and, properly galvanised, lasts a long time. The frame can be engineered for local snow loads. For permanent mountain homes or highland houses used most of the year, we usually recommend a steel house. For smaller seasonal use, a well-insulated fixed tiny house is a good alternative.

Cold-climate details

For Toroslar we specify a steeper roof, thicker wall, floor and roof insulation, insulated double glazing, a stove or strong heating system, and frost-protected plumbing routed through insulated walls with drain valves for houses left empty in winter.

Summer house or year-round home?

A classic highland summer house is used from roughly May to September and closed in winter, but it still has to carry snow on its own and keep its pipes safe. Year-round living in the mountain villages calls for more space, stronger heating and heavier insulation, which a steel house provides. Compare options on our models page.

On sloping plots we place the house away from hollows where snow drifts and meltwater collect, with large south-facing windows for winter sun and smaller openings towards the prevailing wind. A small enclosed entrance porch also keeps cold air out.

Delivery on mountain roads

Our workshop in Ulugöz, Silifke, is roughly 90 km from the city side of Toroslar, and the high villages are reached by steep, winding roads. A steel house can be transported in parts and assembled on site, avoiding the problem of moving large modules on narrow roads. We recommend scheduling installation before the snow season. Forest, pasture and highland land status affects permits, so please check with the municipality. See also our Mersin tiny house page.
